Planned Giving
What is Planned Giving?
- Planned Giving is a donor service that enables you to give gifts of assets during your lifetime or through a will or testamentary instrument
- It can be given now or later
- The process requires planning on the part of the donors, their advisors, and United Way of Mid-Maine
Types of Planned Giving
- Bequest - name United Way of Mid-Maine in your will to ensure future support to your community. Designate an amount of money, a percentage of your estate, or a specific property.
- Life Insurance - contribute a policy you own, assign dividends as a gift, or name United Way of Mid-Maine as a full or partial beneficiary
- Other Planned Gifts - name United Way of Mid-Maine as the beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust (technical form of giving involving trusts and tax techniques), lead trust, or other planned gift. It can be structured to meet your needs and interests as well as those of United Way of Mid-Maine, our agencies, and our community.
How are Planned Gifts Used?
- Most often planned gifts are earmarked for an endowment fund
- The principal of an endowment gift is invested and kept in perpetuity
- Only earning or a portion of the earnings are used each year for specific purposes
What do Planned Gifts Provide?
- Enhanced tax benefits
- Some planned gifts return an income to the donor
- Option of "deferred giving", gifts that will be deferred until a later time, usually named in a will and not realized until the donor deceases
- Motivation to enrich your community now and forever
